There are many different types of sharpening stones in the world. You have thousands of synthetic stones, and a lot of different natural stones from all over the world as well. Arizona has natural stones that are quite popular. I believe Japanese natural stones are the most well know and favored because of the very fine stones you can get from their mines.

Japanese stones are mined from different straits throughout the country. There are mines all over Japan and some of the rarest stone have been mined over 50+ years ago.
